My Hometown, Sidoarjo
Sidoarjo is a lively town located just south of Surabaya. Sidoarjo is known for its aquaculture produce, especially bandeng (milkfish) and shrimp, which are a big part of its local identity and cuisine. Milkfish can be prepared in many ways, but the most famous is the local delicacy, Bandeng Asap (smoked milkfish). Many of Indonesia's local staples, including the famous spicy sambal, get their unique flavor from terasi (shrimp paste), which is also made from Sidoarjo's abundant shrimp.

Sidoarjo is best symbolized by the Jayandaru Monument. Standing tall in the heart of the city, this landmark features large sculptures of a shrimp and a milkfish, celebrating the city's most important aquaculture products. A fascinating fact about the monument's history is that it initially included statues of farmers, traders, and fishermen, which were later removed due to religious concerns.
